Cancer
Cancer is one of the most varied and deadly diseases that humans can develop. Due to the nature of this illness – how it develops and spreads – it can attack just about any area of the body. When it targets a particularly vital organ or system, or if it has the chance to spread throughout the entire body, cancer can quickly degrade one’s health, with the end result being death.
What is Cancer?
Cancer is a disease that damages one’s DNA in a manner that causes excessive cell multiplication. There is a surplus of new cells, and older cells fail to die and be removed. This results in growths known as tumors. These tumors, when considered to be “malignant,” invade vital bodily tissues and inhibit their normal functions. Benign tumors, on the other hand, do not attack body organs or tissues and instead just increase in size. Though they are not life-threatening, these growths can cause health problems or even be disabling, depending on their location.
What treatments are available?
If cancer is not treated vigilantly and in a timely manner, it may result in death. There are several treatment options available to cancer patients:
- Chemotherapy: use of chemicals to stop the reproduction and growth of cancer cells
- Radiation: exposure of the cancer to radiation to kill the malignant cells
- Surgery: operative removal of the growth
- Alternative treatments: includes transplants and various types of therapies
If a physician fails to recognize cancer in a timely manner or misdiagnoses a patient, then treatment may not be administered in time to save his or her life.
