The American Medical Association

The American Medical Association (AMA), founded in 1847, has grown to become the largest group of medical professionals and students in the United States. The members of this professional association have taken it upon themselves to lobby for what they believe to be more favorable health care standards and to promote and work for the advancement of public health. Through the AMA, people can attain information on just about any licensed physician in the United States and learn more about medical conditions and treatment options available.

The AMA Code of Medical Ethics

The American Medical Association has established a code of medical ethics that it periodically updates in order to better adhere to society’s changing standards and questions about the world of medicine. It was originally written in 1847 and has been revised four times since that year. The document states that doctors have a responsibility to provide medical care in a professional and compassionate manner to all people who necessitate it.

The American Medical Association provides patients with information on how to take action against a physician who has been in violation of the code of ethics. It is recommended that victims of an ethical violation should first discuss the matter with the doctor at fault, and take further action, if necessary, by speaking with the state medical society or state licensing board.
