West Shore Dermatologist Pleads Guilty in Drug Case

Posted on September 29th, 2009 No Comments

A West Shore dermatologist has pleaded guilty to multiple prescription drugs offenses that will cost her her state medical license. Dr. Jennifer Zampogna, 37, of Mechanicsburg, entered an open plea to the felony and misdemeanor charges before Cumberland County President Judge Edgar B. Bayley.

Zampogna was charged with writing more than 400 fraudulent prescriptions to feed her addiction to painkillers. The maximum penalty for the charges is more than 10 years in state prison. She will be sentenced in November.

Lawrence Cheba, Senior Deputy Attorney General, said Zampogna wrote fraudulent prescriptions in the names of relatives and patients. Investigators were tipped off when security officials at several West Shore pharmacies began to question the prescriptions.

Lobbyists for bothdoctors and hospitals say they believe the current state budget agreement willrely on about $800 million that had been set aside to help pay medicalmalpractice judgments against doctors, hospitals, nursing homes and nursemidwives.

In a letter written bythe president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Dr. Dan Glunk, he urgedstate senators to reject the $800 million transfer. “We believe this is legallywrong, bad public policy and a breach of faith with Pennsylvania patients anddoctors,” Glunk wrote.

Governor Ed Rendell, whocreated one of the funds that helps cover medical malpractice costs, said thatmalpractice costs have fallen in recent years and proposed using some of themoney for helping the uninsured.

The parents of a young girl who was killed in a medical mistake are suing the doctor who conducted the procedure.  The parents allege that the doctor is responsible for the death of the girl.

According to reports,  the girl died during a routine operating procedure to correct a relatively minor problem.  During the procedure,  a reaction occurred because of medication given the operation.  The girl had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but unfortunately lost her life shortly after arriving.

Doctor claims he was not responsible for Jackson's death

Posted on September 18th, 2009 No Comments

Michael Jackson's former dermatologist claimed he was not responsible for Michael Jackson's death. Dr. Arnold Klein filed a lawsuit earlier this week with a slander charge against another doctor who linked Klein to the murder.

Klein originally was claimed to be partially responsible for the murder, allegedly teaching the doctor who administered Jackson's medication how to administer the medication. Klein, however, denies that he took part in any such act.

Improperly administering medication is an act of medical malpractice. If you have been a victim of such malpractice, contact the Pennsylvania medical malpractice lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., at 610-667-7511.

Malpractice Claims at Record Low in Missouri

Posted on September 9th, 2009 No Comments

The state of Missouri has seen a record low in pending medical malpractice claims with the closing of 2008. On Tuesday, the Insurance Department released a report showing only about 3,000 pending cases at the end of the year.

In the 30 years of recorded insurance history in the state, the number has not been lower. The report also indicates that malpractice claims have dropped since a new law was enacted in 2005 limiting injury law suits.
