A court in Baltimore has ordered a doctor who treated a man who died of sepsis to pay $1.44 million to the victim’s family for medical negligence.
The medical malpractice case was filed in Baltimore County Circuit Court, naming Dr. Richard Tempel with the St. Joseph’s Medical Center as the defendant.
The jury in the case concluded that Dr. Tempel did not provide 59 year-old Thomas Murphy with proper care. Tempel administered a series of tests on Murphy, including an X-ray and CAT scan. Tempel however, failed to diagnose or treat Murphy for sepsis. As a result, Murphy died the day after he was admitted to St. Joseph’s.
Dr. Tempel said he believed Murphy had an infection and subsequently treated him with a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
