Elder abuse in Pennsylvania nursing home

Posted on October 20th, 2011 No Comments

Mary and Paul French of Havertown have filed a lawsuit against Quadrangle Continuing Care Retirement Community in Haverford due to abuse of Mary’s 78 year old mother. French’s mother was an Alzheimer’s patient and complained of abuse on several occasions to her daughter. French installed a hidden video camera in her mother’s room which recorded instances of both verbal and physical abuse. Sunrise Senior Living Inc., which operates Quadrangle, has stated that they anticipated the lawsuit, and their three former female employees will be on trial for assault and neglect charges.

Identifying nursing home abuse, neglect

Posted on June 17th, 2011 No Comments

Experts in nursing home neglect and abuse say that one of the biggest problems is that neglect and abuse can be hard to notice and identify.  In addition, in a lot of cases, the neglect occurs over a long period of time before any signs become noticeable at all.

On the one hand, more obvious signs of abuse include bruising or broken bones.  On the other hand, less obvious signs include gradual weight loss, attitude changes, or a few sores.

Furthermore, experts warn that the abused are often too afraid or embarrassed to report the abuse.  Also, some elderly patients with mental complications may not even realize that any neglect is occurring.

Officials suggest making a note of things that strike you as unusual when visiting a loved one at a nursing home.  Doing this can make a series of less obvious, repeated neglect more obvious.

NYC nursing home abuse case goes to court

Posted on June 4th, 2010 No Comments

A 56-year-old New York City nursing home worker is facing criminal charges after she allegedly caused an 85-year-old woman to fall and failed to help the woman afterward.

The allegations were brought to court by the attorney general. The primary piece of evidence that makes the prosecution sure that the nurse is guilty, despite entry of a not guilty plea, is a video tape that was recovered from the security cameras at the nursing home.

In the footage, the woman is seen moving away a wheelchair from the elderly patient, who in turn falls and breaks her hip. The nurse walks away from the scene, returns, and, all the time, does nothing to help the fallen woman. After another nursing home worker walks past the scene, again not moving to help the woman, the nurse finally calls out for some assistance with helping the injured elderly woman.

According to the defense, the defendant was the one who called out for help eventually, which proves that she simply must not have been able to catch the falling woman in time before hitting the floor.

If you or someone you love has been abused while in a nursing home, you may be eligible for compensation for your injuries. Contact the Pennsylvania nursing home malpractice attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., by calling 610-667-7511 to discuss your claim today.

A nursing home abuse lawsuit against Willowbrook nursing home has been filed. The lawsuit alleges that the nursing home failed to protect a resident from being sexually assaulted by another resident in May of 2009.

The lawsuit was filed by the victim’s mother and states that the victim was assaulted by a fellow resident. The lawsuit states the the nursing home is guilty of neglect for letting the patient stay into the home although there were objections from the staff.
